Why Our Gardens Are Made Of Copper Or
Brass
Our first decision was what kind of
material to use for the garden container. We were unimpressed by
the flimsy Zen gardens we found in most stores, with their wooden
sides, cardboard bases and cheaply made tools. There were others
made of more substantial materials, and some were quite
attractive, but these we found were all too small to be
enjoyable.
Eventually we chose heavy gauge copper and brass
sheet metal because of their durability and beauty. From this we
make the basic tray. We then add mitered copper railings to give a
soothing, attractive finish. Using these beautiful metals, We are
able to make truly attractive, durable, miniature Zen gardens in
any size you want.
Developing A Rake That Works
We also make
the rakes from copper - a much superior model to the light-weight
wood ones available elsewhere.
They are made individually,
by hand, from scratch. After several experiments with various tine
sizes and shapes, we developed tools with a nice heft to them,
which easily slide though the sand, creating distinct, satisfying
patterns with very little practice.
Why Safe Sand?
We next needed to find the
right sand. If the sand is too coarse, the rakes won't make
clearly defined patterns. We use the absolute finest, 'safe sand'
a natural, pure, white sand with a very fine grain. Many
commercial products use ground silicon, which has been found to be
very unsafe and is antithetical to the whole purpose of a Zen
garden, which is intended to promote health and
well-being.
Adding Individual Stones
The rocks or stones
are selected from nature, based on their individual 'character'
and we combine them according to their
harmonies.
